My mom has one but I have no discernable talent for sewing. I can fix a hem or sew a button back on but I was never able to make anything that resembles clothing. I really love to crochet though, I like to make blankets, arm-warmers, scarves, and shawls.

I had an awesome Singer sewing machine. It was made back in the 60s-70s, never broke once during my mom's use of it, nor during my use of it. But when I moved, I had no space for a sewing machine attached to a table. ::sulk:: I'm still itching to get one, but I don't trust the plastic looking new ones.

I have the Hello Kitty sewing machine and it is truly adorable. I've done some amazing wrap skirts on it, but my designs are limited to items without zippers because I can't find a zipper foot for it!

Singer is the best brand there is, classic and so reliable. Mine is not originally Singer but machinery is the same. It's 30 years old, it lived trough a war so I can call it a machine from the non-existing country - Yugoslavia. The factory that made it is called Bagat, and the thing is working as it was brand new. I made many things with it. Often I make some changes to pants, dresses, shirts that I buy. I sew lots of things for me and friends. Ohyeah!! It was the first thing I really *Wanted* when I got married. I asked my granny (who used to sew religiously) for one for christmas. My Mother told her I would never use and not to get it for me. She did anyway. I have made SO much stuff with it that my mom got a little jealous and asked for one for christmas the next year.

too bad the feminist movement erased the requirement that everyone learn to sew and cook! look where it's gotten us? poorly dressed and put together and severely overweight from all that eating out! i want to learn to sew more than a button or a hem. i'm thinking a few chic dresses, a matching bag and some ultra cute tops!

My mom gave me her groovy sewing machine from the 70s. It has psychedelic orange flower patterns on it.

It's been on the frizz, though. Pulling thread so tight they keep snapping. Not sure how to fix it. I'm sewing by hand for now. It takes forever, but it's very meditative, and I do good work if I do say so myself. Heehee.

There are so many geeky fun things you can make. For my bestie friend's daughter I am able to convert the maid of honor dress I wore to her parents' wedding for kimono slippers, and a kimono wrap dress. Then there is the cloth three-toed sloth DS cover I made my husband. The list goes on.

For some reason, when my grandma passed away my effing grandfather decided to SELL my grandmother's pro Singer machine that did like 100 different stitches, the one I learned how to sew on. I was so sad that I didn't get that one.

I'd like to buy one now, but it seems like they're so expensive. That said, I haven't looked in about a year. I might just try to find a refurbed one now.

looseseal--it sounds like your tension is off and may need to be adjusted. Should be pretty simple, check your manual for the type of fabric you're using, but if you don't have it anymore, just play with the tension settings and see what works. Good luck!

My family used to have a sewing machine, but it was really, really old. I think my cousin has one now and my mom and aunts and grandmother just sew. I would get one, but I think I would accidentally sew my fingers together.

I started to sew crazy fleece hats regularly with my mom's sewing machine last year. She got so tired of me borrowing it that I received my very own for Christmas! I've kept it very busy making hats to sell at a few local events and conventions since then. It is one of my favorite gifts of all times right next to my Nintendo DS.

Thanks, geeksugar, I've been trying the tension knob, but it tightens up by itself after a while of sewing no matter how I turn it. It's weird. Maybe it needs some WD40. 'Cause everything can be fixed with either duct tape or WD40... XD

I do have a beautiful antique Singer from the 1950's...but it needs a lot of work before I can use it. I need to do some research on that one!

I got a sewing machine for Christmas a few years ago. Me and clothing don't mix too well- a make a lot of mistakes (the seamripper and me are old pals) and am really sloppy when I sew, but I like making things of the purse variety. I've made a purse, two swingbags, and a laptop case.

I'm sure Project Runway has a lot to do with a "sewing revolution". I learned to sew in 10th grade in a class called Clothing and Design. I haven't sewn in a while, I altered a bathing suit strap that I got back in June, but I really like to sew. I wish I had space to keep my machine out so I could do it more.

She just stopped sewing because it became such a hassle to set it on the table. The thing weighs like 100 lbs. I hope I can find the manual. I am trying to figure out how to oil it. I am sure it is from the late 50s or 60s and runs great. I am so excited to get started! I have so many great ideas!
