"You" Season 4 Had a Lot of Deaths Despite Joe's Vow to Stop His Murderous Ways

Part two of "You" season four was released on Netflix on March 9, and to say the installment's main plot twist was unexpected would be an understatement.

Part one premiered in early February and followed our lovable serial killer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) through his fresh start as a reformed murderer in London. Joe starts his life over under the identity of university professor Jonathon Moore and has a notable friendship with star literature student Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman), who is an aspiring thriller writer. But of course, in classic Joe fashion, he's not just in the UK to start a new life, but also to stalk Marienne, the object of his desire from season three. In part one, he runs into Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), but seemingly decides to let her go back to her daughter in Paris to prove that he's changed.

We also meet the Eat the Rich Killer, a serial murderer who is targeting London's elite, who just so happens to be in Joe's new circle of friends. The killer has set out to identify the real Joe threatening to expose him to Joe's new love interest Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), and her rich group of friends: university professor Malcolm (Stephen Hagan), socialite Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper), and her nepo-baby boyfriend Adam (Lukas Gage), author and emerging politician Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers), troubled artist Simon (Aidan Cheng) and his sister Sophie (Niccy Lin), popular and wealthy Roald (Ben Wiggins), and another vapid socialite Gemma (Eve Austin).

In part one, the Eat the Rich Killer takes down Malcolm (in the first episode no less), Simon, and Gemma, and reveals himself to Joe as Rhys Montrose. And although Joe vows not to let the killer take down any more of his friends, part two still brings a lot of death and a very surprising plot twist. Here's everyone who dies in "You" season four, part two.

Does Malcolm Die in "You" Season 4?

Joe's neighbor and colleague at Darcy College Malcolm Harding (Stephen Hagan) is the first character to die in season four. He is confident, pompous, and wealthy, so Joe hates him, naturally. Although Joe despises being in his presence, he vows not to make his new life in London like his old one by murdering him.

Imagine Joe's surprise when he finds Malcolm stabbed to death and missing a finger on his dining room table after a night of debauchery with Malcolm's wealthy friends. Joe doesn't believe he killed Malcolm, but given his past, he doesn't put it past himself. He dismembers Malcolm's body and disposes of it throughout London.

Later, Joe gets an anonymous text that someone had planted the dead body in his living room and planned to frame Joe for the murder. This is our first introduction to the Eat The Rich Killer.

Simon Soo (Aidan Cheng) is also part of Malcolm's wealthy friend group and is the second death this season. He is an artist without a troubling past, and Joe sets out to learn more about his story.

However, after Joe falls asleep during a stakeout outside of Simon's, he receives a text from the Eat The Rich Killer, letting him know that Simon was murdered. He was stabbed in the same way as Malcolm, though the killer took his ear as an ode to Van Gogh. Simon's murder makes it clear that the Eat The Rich Killer is stalking Joe.

Does Vic Die in "You" Season 4?

Joe tries his hardest to lay low throughout this season, but not low enough not to catch one person's eye (aside from the Eat The Rich Killer). One of the elite member's bodyguards Vic (Sean Pertwee) begins to suspect that Joe is the Eat The Rich Killer.

Vic tries to attack Joe after Simon's funeral, leaving Joe no choice but to fight back and strangle Vic to death. Joe buries him over Simon's gold-plated coffin, noting to himself that he is still really good at this. This is a quick death that Joe covers up with a letter of resignation, leaving no one to question the bodyguard's disappearance as a murder.

Does Gemma Die in "You" Season 4?
Netflix

Does Gemma Die in "You" Season 4?

Gemma Graham-Greene (Eve Austin) is the final death of season four, part one. She is part of the wealthy friend group that has taken Joe in, still thinking he is professor Jonathon Moore. In episode five, they retreat to a fully staffed countryside estate for the weekend.

Gemma's character is obnoxious, racist, and classist, at one point forcing one of the staff to use his body as a hoop during a game of croquet. She also suggests Joe is the Eat The Rich Killer, though she has no objective evidence to back it up.

Joe finds Kate, Malcolm's girlfriend and Joe's current love interest, kneeling over Gemma's body, holding the knife that killed her. Joe immediately thinks Kate is the Eat The Rich Killer; however, Kate reveals that she only found Gemma this way.

Does Rhys Die in "You" Season 4?
Netflix

Does Rhys Die in "You" Season 4?

Part 2 begins with Joe on a mission to take down Rhys Montrose before Rhys Montrose can take down anyone else. We learn in this part that Rhys wants Joe to kill Kate's father, Tom Lockwood (Greg Kinnear), a very wealthy and well-connected public figure. Tom and Joe have a conversation at a "meet my father" dinner with Kate, where he basically tells Joe that he will be well protected and in his good graces if Joe tracks down Rhys for him. He tells Joe where Rhys is staying, and when Joe goes to Rhys's countryside estate, we see that Rhys has no idea who Joe is. When Joe knocks him out and ties him naked to a chair, Rhys claims repeatedly that he never met Joe and is not a killer, causing Joe to stranlge him to death.

It is here we learn that Joe has been in one big state of hallucination since his night at Sundry House in episode one. He had been imagining a relationship with Rhys the entire time and using him as murderous alter ego.

Without realizing, Joe murdered Malcolm, Simon, Gemma, and a body guard who was on to him. And in typical Joe fashion, he also discovers that he kidnapped Marienne and had her held captive in a glass cage.

Does Adam Die in "You" Season 4?
Netflix

Does Adam Die in "You" Season 4?

One of the only other people who dies in the second half is Adam, who has been a notably terrible character throughout the entire season. He is one of the few Americans in season four, coming from a rich East Coast family. He is in a relationship with Lady Pheobe, but has a history of cheating on her to indulge in a power play style of fetish. We also discover in this season that he has lost all of his business projects and all of his possessions. He tries to hold on to Pheobe to keep his social status, even taking advantage of her extremely vulnerable state (all of her friends are dead) by asking her for a very quick wedding. This particular death has nothing to do with Joe or the Eat the Rich Killer. Kate's father Tom Lockwood recognizes that Adam is causing distress with his daughter's relationship with Lady Pheobe, so he hires people to take care of Adam.

Kate's father Tom has been involved in many schemes, from black money to mysterious deaths. Kate and her father have always had a troubled relationship, and Joe believes Kate's life would be easier if her father were not in the picture. Although he creates this belief about Tom through his Rhys hallucination, Tom lets on that he knows all about Joe's real identity. Rhys's body has also been identified and Joe believes that it is Tom's doing. After killing Tom's bodyguard Hugo, Joe suffocates Tom and figures out a way to pin the blame on Hugo.

Does Eddie Die in "You" Season 4?
Netflix

Does Eddie Die in "You" Season 4?

The final death in "You" season four is Eddie, a student from Joe's class, and Nadia's (sort of) love interest. Nadia had been onto Joe for a while and had even discovered Marienne in the cag after snooping around in Joe's apartment and finding concerning photos of Joe leaving the building he had Marienne locked up in. After all of the other deaths, Nadia goes back to Joe's apartment to find any other incriminating evidence, leaving Eddie on guard duty outside. When she steps back outside the apartment, she finds that Joe has killed Eddie and has an elaborate plan for Nadia to save her own life in exchange for taking the blame for Eddie's death.
